CATIA (3DEXPERIENCE CATIA)

CATIA (Dassault Systèmes, now sold as part of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform) is where mechanical CAD tips over into full product-lifecycle and systems engineering: it is built for projects — an aircraft, a car body, a large industrial plant — where thousands of parts, multiple engineering disciplines and manufacturing planning all have to stay consistent with each other. Its surfacing tools remain the reference point for the smooth, Class-A surfaces of a car body or a consumer product's outer shell.

It is not aimed at individuals: there is no maker edition and no simple self-serve checkout, and licensing is quoted directly through Dassault or a reseller after a conversation about the project. Worth knowing by name even if you never open it as a student, because it is what "CAD" means at the largest aerospace and automotive employers.

Recognise CATIA as the software behind the largest, most complex products rather than something to install and practise on casually.

It is not really in competition with anything else on this list: SolidWorks, from the same vendor, stops well short of CATIA's systems-engineering and Class-A surfacing scale, and no other package here is aimed at projects of comparable size. Recognise it by name for what it represents rather than expecting to trial it as a student.
