Rhinoceros (Rhino)

Rhino models with NURBS curves and surfaces rather than the sketch-and-feature-tree approach of SolidWorks or Fusion, which makes it substantially better at freeform, organic and complex surfacing — hull forms, product shells, jewellery, architectural geometry — and noticeably less convenient for the dimension-driven mechanical parts this archive's sheets are drawn around. It is not a rejection of precision: Rhino is exact NURBS geometry throughout, just organised around curves and surfaces instead of parametric features.

Licensing is the other thing that sets it apart from almost everything else on this list: Rhino is a one-time purchase with no expiry and no mandatory subscription, at a price that undercuts a single year of most seat-licensed competitors here. Grasshopper, its visual scripting add-on bundled with every licence, brings parametric and generative workflows back in for anyone who wants them, on top of the freeform core.

Choose Rhino if the shapes you need to design do not reduce cleanly to extrudes and revolves, or if you specifically want a perpetual licence and are prepared to trade feature-tree convenience for surfacing power to get it.

Against Plasticity, the other freeform tool on this list, Rhino is the older, broader, more precision-oriented package with a steeper learning curve and full NURBS surfacing depth. Plasticity is faster to learn and faster to iterate in for concept work, but has a narrower toolset built specifically around booleans rather than surfacing.
