Autodesk's answer to SolidWorks
Autodesk's parametric mechanical design package, closer to SolidWorks than Fusion in workflow, chosen mainly for its native DWG support and its place inside the Autodesk product line.
Inventor is Autodesk's parametric, feature-based mechanical design package — closer to SolidWorks than to Fusion in workflow, and aimed at companies rather than individual makers. It handles large assemblies, sheet metal, frame design and cable/harness routing, and reads and writes AutoCAD's DWG format natively, which matters when drawings need to move between a 2D drafting department and a 3D design one.
The practical reason to pick Inventor over SolidWorks is usually not the modelling engine itself — the logic is similar enough that skills transfer both ways — but the ecosystem: a company already running AutoCAD, Vault and other Autodesk tools gets tighter integration by staying inside Autodesk's product line.
Worth learning if you are targeting employers who list Autodesk tools specifically, or already use AutoCAD and want a 3D package that shares its file format.
The comparison that actually matters is not Inventor vs. SolidWorks — the modelling logic is similar enough that the choice is rarely about capability — but Inventor vs. Fusion within Autodesk's own line-up: Inventor is the locally-installed, assembly-heavy tool for an engineering department, Fusion the cloud-connected generalist for a smaller team that also manufactures its own parts.
